INTRODUCTION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL AND GOVERNANCE AWARENESS

Public companies are increasingly aware of (and concerned about) the need to manage for environmental, social, and governance issues (a.k.a. ESG or sustainability issues). That is, in part, because of a steady and increasing flow of ESG-based shareholder resolutions over the last decade. The growth in these resolutions corresponds to the increase in ESG-focused investing in the Malaysia.

ESG describes areas that characterize a sustainable, responsible or ethical investment. It was defines ESG as a generic term used in capital markets and used by investors to evaluate corporate behaviour and to determine the future financial performance of companies. It is used by investors to evaluate corporations and determine the future financial performance of companies. It adds that ESG are a subset of non-financial performance indicators which include sustainable, ethical and corporate governance issues such as managing a company’s carbon footprint and ensuring there are systems in place to ensure accountability. They are factors in investment considerations, used in risk assessment strategies incorporated into both investment decisions and risk management processes.

This awareness training is designed to help real estate investment stakeholders identify key drivers and overcome the most common barriers for action to integrate ESG and climate change risks into their decision making processes. It has been carefully prepared with input from many knowledgeable industry experts and resources in Malaysia and the United Nations Environment Programme.
