Author, of the book, entitled, ‘Adult & Continuing Professional Education’, published by Patridge-Penhuin,Balan Dass has attained a Ph.D in Extension Education, majoring in Adult and Continuing Education, from University Putra Malaysia, a Master in
Education majoring in Training and Development from the University of Sheffield, UK, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management from the University of Humberside, UK. He also holds a graduate Diploma in Training and Development from Chartered Institute
of Personal and Development, UK, and a C-IV certificate in Training and Workplace Assessment from the Australian National Training Authority
Professional Membership
Balan Dass is a professional Life member and National Deputy President of Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management-2010-2012. He is the academic/certification director for OUM-IPD-MIHRM Diploma collaboration. Currently, he holds the post of National Vice-president for the term 2012-2014, and is the academic chairman. He has in a short span of time transformed the academic unit by introducing various certificate, diploma, post-graduate, and master programs related to the enhancement of human resource management. He has initiated collaboration programs with GLCs’, universities and the private sectors. He also holds membership with the Malaysian Institute of Management and Technology Association of Malaysia, whereby he holds the position of academic education and training chairman for the term, 2012-2013
Professional Certification
Dr Balan Dass has been certified by Dr Scott Parry of Training House USA, as a “Catalytic Instructor.” He is also an accredited trainer for TEAM Management Systems, UK, The Open College, UK, The Expert Manager, UK, DTS International, DISC Inventory, Australia, Tee Side Tertiary College, UK, in Supervisory Management. He also holds the professional Train-the-Trainer certification from Malaysian Institute of Management and HRDF, and the certification in Training Evaluation(CITE) from HRDF. Balan Dass is also certified to conduct the Pin Plan Program from Germany. He is also certified to run the ‘PSMB-Train-the-Trainer’ program in Malaysia
Appointments and Awards
Recently he was appointed as the professional advisor by the Chartered Institute of Personal and Development, UK., to monitor the quality assurance locally. He is also the HR Consultant with the National Human Resource Center, PSMB, Malaysia and he received the ‘Excellent Facilitator’ Award for the year 2011 from MIHRM. On the social side, Balan is a Competent Toastmaster and has held positions from being a committee member to president and division governor, in Toastmaster International, and Rotary International, where he was invited to facilitate youth development programs in Spain, Australia, USA, India and Malaysia. Currently, Balan sits in the Disciplinary committee at the Royal Lake Club, Malaysia
Work Experience
Balan has worked for SMEs’ and MNC before setting up his own human resource and training practice. He worked as a HR Manager in a leading Real Estate Agency with a work force of about 500, before he moved on to Electrolux Group, as their Training Manager at the Electrolux Business School. Here, he helped to design, deliver and evaluate training programs conducted at all levels. He had personally commissioned a video shoot on operations cleaning for the cleaners which is still being used. He ran supervisory, executive and management development programs at the Electrolux Business School.
Balan was the CEO and Principal of Skills and Management Institute of SKB. It was here he designed tertiary programs for the real estate, construction and property industry. He was responsible for initiating joint venture for the programs; Diploma and later the Degree programs with John Moores University, construction related programs with Teeside Tertiary College, UK, and the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, Australia. During his tenure, he also developed and organized conventions, boot camps for the real estate agents. He can be mentioned as the pioneer who created a systematic training curriculum for the real estate industry in Malaysia
Balan also teaches part-time at leading private and public universities. He facilitates the under-graduates, and post graduates, facilitating different modules of interest. The universities taught by him includes universities from, Australia, UK, USA and France, who are affiliated with local universities. Some modules taught by him, includes, Change Management, Leadership, Human Resource Management, Adult and Continuing Education. Balan also has delivered papers on various topical topics at conferences and has also contributed articles to leading HR magazines, and portals’ Balan has delivered management development programs for participants consisting of executives to senior managers in countries like; Sudan, Australia, Indonesia, Brunei and India
Current Interest
Balan Dass is now developing long term competency development programs for companies in the areas of supervisory development, executive development management development and competency mapping. In these areas programs participants are able to journey
with the facilitators for a number of modules with work base projects given through action research, and the same is assessed and evaluated for the management. Via these programs the individual enhances new knowledge and skill and therefore transfers these
new knowledge to the workplace, thus being competent. His other area of interest is promoting programs related to adult and continuing professional education, whereby, professional providers need to undertake proper program and needs planning,
develop adult learning curriculum and evaluation for their stakeholders; and being a HR business coach.
