Upstream Oil & Gas Development Lifecycle Costing
Details
The lifecycle costs of an upstream oil and gas development are very high and subject to great uncertainty. However, it is crucial to be able to generate reliable cost estimates, covering the full lifecycle, at every stage.
Costing is particularly challenging during the early lifecycle stages, when uncertainty is at a maximum, and information is limited and often unavailable. It is during the early (front-end) stages of exploration and development that reliable costs are crucial to support key development decisions.
Costing of offshore assets is also particularly challenging on account of: limited specialist supply chain; supplier cost fluctuations over the business cycle; technological change; project complexity; move to unconventional resources; move to harsher environments;
etc.

Outline
The objective of the course is to prepare participants to be able to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams on field development planning tasks leading to investment decision, and in particular to equip them with:
- Knowledge - A good understanding of the challenges and process of lifecycle cost forecasting.
- Skills - Techniques and ‘rules of thumb’ for costing particular field components.
- Information - Useful documents and data sets, for later reference.
The course is suitable for upstream oil and gas professionals that wish to improve their understanding of, and skills in, lifecycle costing. The course is suitable for the full range of disciplines that are involved in asset (field) development planning, including: geoscience; reservoir engineering; well engineering; development engineering; facilities engineering; planning; risk analysis, portfolio planning, decision support, commercial strategy; and economics.
Participants should be familiar with Microsoft Excel, however no specialist analytical or engineering skills are required.Participants will greatly benefit from bringing their own laptop, installed with Microsoft Excel and Google Chrome browser.
- Different resource types (oil, gas, conventional, unconventional)
- Different situations and environments (onshore, offshore, deep water, desert, etc)
- All lifecycle stages (acquire, explore, appraise, define, develop, operate, decommission)
- The full value chain, from reservoir, through production, gathering, processing, conversion (e.g. to LNG), export, and up to point of sale.
- The various offshore development concepts (platform, FPSO, semi-sub, spar, subsea tie-back)
- All cost categories (exploration & appraisal, drillex, capex, opex, decommissioning, owner’s costs)
Speaker/s
Geoffrey specialises in field development strategy, definition and value optimisation. On investment projects, Geof works with multi-disciplinary teams of sub-surface and economics professionals, as concept and facilities engineer, to evaluate petroleum assets. On front-end projects, Geof works with the wider team of discipline engineers, to identify optimal development solutions, providing expertise in strategy, costing, phasing and risk. On all projects, Geof applies his advanced information management and analysis skills to ensure that business decisions are based on information that is fully consistent, transparent and auditable.
